Welcome to the Dixie Desperados
We welcome new shooters and will do all we can to help you
have a safe and fun experience in cowboy action shooting.
Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) is NOT fast-draw. The guns we shoot are of pre-1900 design, although most are newly manufactured. We each shoot 2 single-action revolvers, a lever action rifle, and a shotgun (see the SASS link below for detailed information regarding what specific firearms are acceptable). We typically shoot 6 "stages" at each of our bimonthly club matches. In each "stage" we typically shoot each of our revolvers (normally 5 shots each), our rifle (normally 10 shots) and our shotgun (typically 2 - 6 shots). Each stage has a scripted order for shooting the targets and our score is based on time, with a 5 second penalty for each miss and larger penalties for shooting out of sequence or any unsafe shooting or gun handling. The sport is easy for a beginner to learn, but remains challenging for even the most experienced shooters. Although most of our shooters are middle-aged, we have shooters of all ages. Many women also enjoy cowboy action shooting and our club boasts having some of the best women shooters in the state. Although we have a BLAST shooting, we also greatly enjoy the camaraderie that exists among those of us that love the old west and enjoy dressing up cowboy and shooting the old "smoke poles." If you also find these things appealing, you will find like-minded and friendly folks here among the Dixie Desperados.

We encourage you to check the main website for cowboy action shooting, the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS), at
The SASS website has links to rule books, instructional materials, and many other helpful items.
If you want to try out cowboy action shooting before making an investment in guns and equipment,
please contact us and we will be happy to arrange for everything you need, including basic instruction, at any of our regular shoots. Also, on most 5th Saturdays we hold a new shooters clinic specifically designed to introduce new shooters to our sport. These clinics are free and include safety, lecture, and hands-on instruction.
Please let us know if you would like to attend.
